I've been listening to a lot of travel podcasts lately. Usually when I am in my kitchen, putting away dishes or cooking, I have an Audible book playing, (because, let's be honest, that's the only way I can get through this month's Book Club selection). But lately, I have been listening to these 45 minute long podcasts featuring some incredible people, talking about traveling to 100+ countries, all the while being paid to do so, and boy, do they sound happy! One gentleman, known as the Backpacking Intern, has traveled all over the world taking various internships with mostly tech companies, asking only for food and a place to live while living there. He just finished his 100th internship in ANTARCTICA! Fascinating!
Then there's me. A 35 year old Mother and Wife who has a lovely hairdressing business, close family and really not one thing to complain about, except that I have the heart of a traveler and haven't really been anywhere.
Well, that's not entirely true. I talk to my clients about the things I have experienced and they seem to think I have had a relatively fascinating life up this point. I did live in Manhattan for a summer, worked in the middle of Time Square peddling Broadway Shows, and auditioning to be on Broadway myself in my "spare time." I've auditioned for American Idol twice. Obviously that worked out. I've been to a few interesting destinations in the U.S., and went to Mexico once as a kid on a mission trip with my family. We went on a cruise for a family reunion a few years ago, and we were able to get off the ship and take one scary-ass cab ride (with a one year old child strapped within an inch of his life to my husband's chest) in Cozumel to the beach.
That is about the extent of my travels. I think I've been to...(counting in my head)...10 states in my 35 years... most of them on trips with friends or family. So, you know, nothing really to complain about. Again, I have SUCH a wonderful life!
...But I cry every time I see "Eat, Pray, Love." I get this odd feeling in my tummy when I listen to the podcasts, and hear these people, these fellow wandering souls, talk about how they just couldn't sit at home anymore. They wanted to see the world and all that it had to offer. They wanted to feel the air in the Alps, touch the sand in the Caribbean, watch the Buddhist monks pray in Cambodia. Just like me, they lived a, by average standards, normal life. They made a living, raised a family, paid their bills, and to travel when they earned and saved enough money.
SO, what is this blog about? Well, I think (ha) it's about how I want to share with you my experience of finally getting to go somewhere amazing that I have always wanted to go...like DREAMED of going since I was a teenager.
In 5 weeks and 5 days, I am going to Italy! It's been my #1 destination to visit for a very long time, and I can't wait to share it with you. I am a totally inexperienced World traveler, so I have no idea what I am doing. I have one month to think about packing, to decide if we are going to book hotels/apartments for our excursions, or just wing it (which is my husband's preference...my OCD may or may not be okay with that), and what all to see and expect when I get there.
We are flying into Pisa, staying for 2 days in an apartment, and then heading to our villa in Montaione (Tuscany). Our goal is to head over to Venice before turning south to Rome, where we will fly out two weeks later. I am so excited!
So, come travel with me, help me figure out this travel thing, and see the world, feel free to give me advice/travel tips, and maybe we can learn something together!!
